Should I just use the free Rank Math plugin?

The multi-site quota point is the one people discover late. Google’s 200 submissions a day is counted per Google Cloud project, not per website. Run eight WordPress sites through one Cloud project with a plugin on each, and the installs will race each other for a shared budget none of them can see. A tool that knows about all your sites can allocate that budget deliberately instead.

How does the trigger difference matter?

A plugin submits at the moment you publish, which is the ideal signal. Indexa submits on a daily sitemap check, which is slightly later but catches things a publish hook misses — programmatic updates, rebuilds, bulk imports, and changes made outside the CMS.

Indexa re-queues a URL when its lastmod moves in your sitemap, with a per-site daily cap so a single bulk edit cannot consume the whole Google budget in one pass. That only works if your sitemap’s lastmod is honest — which matters more than most people realise.

Price, immediacy, setup effort and platform reach. It is free, it fires the instant you hit publish, it obtains an IndexNow key without any manual file handling, and it works on any operating system because it runs on your server rather than your desktop.

If you are on WordPress, on Linux, or unwilling to spend anything, Rank Math is the answer and this page has done its job.

Can I use both?

Yes, and for a mixed portfolio that is often the right setup — the plugin on your WordPress sites, Indexa for the rest. The one thing to watch is that they will share the same Google daily quota if they authenticate through the same Google Cloud project.

Two ways to keep that clean: give the WordPress installs their own Google Cloud project so the budgets are genuinely separate, or point everything at one project and lower Indexa’s daily budget to leave headroom for the plugins. Either works; the mistake is not realising the budget is shared at all.
